Why Has the WPP Share Price Moved in 2026?

WPP is one of the world's largest advertising and marketing services groups. Its shares have had two very different years. The story of 2026 only makes sense against the losses of 2025.

From a 59% Fall in 2025 to a March Low

In 2025 the shares lost 59.21%, according to MarketScreener. Client losses and weak organic growth weighed on the group. Fears about AI added to the pressure.

The fall cost WPP its place in the FTSE 100 in December 2025, as O'Dwyer's reported. The shares kept sliding into early 2026 and hit 218.50p on 23 March.

The H1 2026 Results on 6 August

The turn came with the WPP H1 2026 results. Revenue less pass-through costs (RLPTC), the group's main top-line measure, fell 4.7% like-for-like in the first half. The second quarter was better, with a decline of 2.8%.

The shares rose as much as 29% on results day, as exchange4media reported. They then touched a fresh 52-week high. Investors focused on the improving trend in Q2 and on new business wins. The rally started from a low base after the 2025 fall, and revenue was still declining.

The Q2 Trend by Unit and Region

The improvement in Q2 was broad. WPP Media, the largest unit, fell 2.8% in Q2, against 5.4% for the half year as a whole. Asia Pacific and Latin America returned to small growth in the quarter.

WPP Rejoins FTSE 100

FTSE Russell confirmed on 28 September that WPP would join the FTSE 100 on 1 October 2026. It replaced Beazley after Zurich's takeover of the insurer, according to the FTSE Russell notice. WPP left the FTSE 250 on the same date.

The day before entry brought heavy index flows. On 30 September, 31.05 million shares changed hands, per Investing.com. Most other sessions in the past month saw 3 million to 6 million shares traded.

Recent Sessions

Since mid-September the stock has moved sideways. Closing prices have stayed between 372.30p and 394.40p. The 20-session average close to 14 October was about 383.1p (own calculation).

The 13 October gain came on the day Publicis reported strong Q3 numbers. The 8 October fall coincided with the shares going ex-dividend, which typically lowers the price by roughly the dividend amount. The fall of 12.7p that day was larger than the 7.5p dividend.

WPP 5 Year Share Price History

The recent rally needs a longer view. Over the five full calendar years to 2025, the shares fell sharply. The 2026 gain so far recovers only a small share of the 2025 loss.

Year Year-end close (p) Annual change
2021 1,119.50 +39.94%
2022 820.20 -26.74%

What to Expect from the WPP Q3 2026 Trading Update

The Q3 update is the next hard catalyst. It covers the three and nine months to 30 September 2026.

Date and Time

WPP confirmed the date in a notice filed with the SEC on 1 October. The call starts at "9.00am (BST)" according to that notice.

The calendar adds a small twist. UK clocks go back on 25 October, four days before the update. So the UK will be on GMT on the day, and the call will most likely start at 09:00 UK time. Readers may wish to confirm the time on WPP's investor pages.

Item UK time (GMT) US Eastern (EDT)
Q3 trading update release (usual slot) 07:00 03:00
Analyst conference call 09:00 05:00
LSE open 08:00 04:00

Source: WPP Notification of Q3 2026 Trading Update (SEC Form 6-K). The 07:00 release slot is WPP's usual practice and is an assumption. The notice gives the call time as 9.00am (BST), shown here as 09:00 UK time. US clocks change on 1 November.

Company Guidance for 2026

WPP set out its WPP 2026 guidance with the interim results. The company said on 23 September that this guidance was unchanged, in its CFO succession announcement.

Guidance item (FY2026) Company guidance
H2 LFL revenue less pass-through costs Decline of low to mid-single digits
Headline operating margin 12% to 13%
Adjusted operating cash flow before working capital £800m to £900m
Proceeds from disposal-related activity Over £200m
FX impact on RLPTC About 0.7% drag (at USD/GBP 1.35)
Total dividend 15.0p intended

The Comparison Base

The Q3 2025 figures set a low bar. In the Q3 2025 trading update, RLPTC fell 5.9% like-for-like. WPP cut its full-year guidance at the time. Cindy Rose said in that release that recent performance was "unacceptable".

An easier comparison can help the reported trend. Client losses from earlier years still feed through, so a better result is far from certain.

What Markets Are Likely to Watch

Traders often focus on a few numbers in a trading update like this one.

  • The Q3 like-for-like change in RLPTC, against the Q2 figure of -2.8%.
  • Any change to the 12% to 13% margin guidance.
  • Any early comment on a return to organic growth in 2027.
  • The trend at the top 25 clients after a 3.2% fall in Q2.
  • News on disposals, including the PR firm Burson.
  • An update on the search for a new CFO.

The WPP Elevate28 Turnaround Plan

Cindy Rose became chief executive on 1 September 2025. She presented the WPP Elevate28 plan with the 2025 preliminary results on 26 February 2026.

Structure and Phases

The plan turns WPP into a single company with four operating units across four regions. In the results release Rose said the underperformance had been "driven by excessive organisational complexity, a lack of an integrated operating model and inconsistent strategic execution."

Phase Year Stated aim
Stabilise 2026 Put the new structure in place and slow the decline
Build 2027 Build momentum toward organic growth
Accelerate 2028 onwards Deliver faster, higher-quality growth
Savings target By 2028 £500m of gross annualised cost savings

FY2025 Starting Point

The 2025 numbers show the scale of the task. Headline operating profit fell 22.6% and the dividend was cut by 61.9%.

FY2025 figure Value Change
Revenue £13,550m -3.6% LFL
Revenue less pass-through costs £10,176m -5.4% LFL
Headline operating profit £1,321m -22.6% reported

Cost Savings and Job Cuts

WPP says it is on track for £100m of in-year savings in 2026, per the interim results. The wider programme targets £500m of gross annualised savings by 2028.

The group plans up to 1,000 more job cuts by the end of 2026. That adds to about 11,000 jobs lost since the start of 2025, according to an FT report cited by O'Dwyer's. WPP had 97,388 people at 30 June, according to its interim results.

Not everyone expects the savings to reach profit. Goldman Sachs argued in June that much of the £500m could be absorbed by incentives and investment, as well as wage inflation, according to The Market Reporter. The bank forecast WPP free cash flow of £684m in 2028.

Disposals, Including the Burson Sale

WPP expects disposal-related proceeds of over £200m in 2026. In October it agreed to sell its 21% stake in PRAP Japan for about $10m, with closing expected by 30 October, as O'Dwyer's reported.

A WPP Burson sale would be far larger. The FT has said Burson "could command a price in the high hundreds of millions of pounds", as quoted by O'Dwyer's. WPP has not confirmed a deal.

Leadership Changes and Governance

Management turnover is an open question for investors. Two senior roles are due to change hands within the next 12 months.

The Pay Policy Vote

About 25% of votes went against the new pay policy at the 8 May AGM, as Campaign reported. The policy lifts the maximum package for Cindy Rose to £11.1m. The WPP pay policy vote still passed with about 75% support.

WPP vs Publicis and the Industry Backdrop

The contrast with the largest European rival is stark. Publicis grew while WPP shrank.

Measure WPP Publicis
Latest quarter organic growth -2.8% (Q2 2026, RLPTC LFL) +5.0% (Q3 2026, net revenue)
Year-to-date organic growth -4.7% (H1 2026) +4.8% (9M 2026)
FY2026 top-line guidance H2 decline of low to mid-single digits +4.5% to +5%

Source: WPP Interim Results, WPP 2025 Preliminary Results and Publicis Q3 2026 revenue release. Measures differ between the companies. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

The Publicis Q3 2026 release on 13 October confirmed full-year guidance. Arthur Sadoun said in the release that Q3 growth was accelerating. He added that Publicis was "further widening the gap with our peers." According to Adweek, Sadoun described the industry as a three-horse race after Omnicom's takeover of Interpublic.

Global Ad Revenue Forecast 2026

Ad spending itself is growing fast. WPP Media's midyear forecast puts 2026 global ad revenue growth, excluding US political spending, at 8.9% to $1.3trn, per exchange4media. That was up from 7.1% in December.

The same WPP Media forecast, as summarised by exchange4media, notes that AI chatbots are emerging as competing platforms for consumer time. Shifts like this can change where clients spend, which adds uncertainty for agency revenue.

AI Disruption: Two Views

The debate on AI disruption at WPP has two sides.

  • Deutsche Bank raised its target to 555p in September and kept a positive view on UK media, per The Market Reporter.
  • Goldman Sachs started coverage with a Sell rating in June and questioned a near-term return to growth, per The Market Reporter.
  • WPP itself says its WPP Open platform is increasingly driving day-to-day workflows, in its interim results.
The Q3 update tests one question above all. Can WPP keep narrowing its decline while its largest European rival grows at about 5%? The answer may shape the share price more than any single headline figure.

WPP Dividend and Balance Sheet

The WPP dividend was cut hard for 2025. The board intends to hold the total at 15.0p for 2026.

Dividend item Value Date
FY2024 total dividend 39.4p Paid in 2025
FY2025 total dividend 15.0p Paid in 2025 and 2026
2026 interim dividend 7.5p Record date 9 Oct, payment 2 Nov 2026
FY2026 intended total 15.0p Final subject to the board

Source: WPP 2026 Interim Results and WPP 2025 Preliminary Results. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. The intended FY2026 total remains subject to board approval and may change.

On the 15.0p intended total, the yield at the 14 October close of 388.6p is about 3.9% (own calculation). That figure is before taxes and costs, which may vary. Dividends can be changed or cancelled. Readers new to income shares can find background in this guide to dividend investing.

UK shares usually go ex-dividend one business day before the record date. For the 2026 interim payment, the WPP ex-dividend date was 8 October.

Net Debt and Cash Flow

WPP net debt was £2,935m at 30 June, down from £3,261m a year earlier, per the interim results. About £125m of that improvement came from an accounting change under IFRS 9.

Earnings also face higher costs below operating profit. The headline tax rate was 33.5% in H1, up from 18.3% a year earlier. Reported net finance costs rose to £169m from £140m.

How Traders Often Read These Levels

The price sits above all the main moving averages. Many chartists read that as a longer-term uptrend. An ADX near 14 points to a weak trend in the short run, which fits the sideways range since September.

Traders often watch two lines into the Q3 update. Some chartists treat a daily close above about 400p as a sign of strength, with the 412.6p high as the next reference level. Others watch for a break below about 362p, with the 100-day average near 322p as the next reference level below.

These are illustrative readings, and price gaps on results day can jump past any level. The basics of these tools are covered in guides to the moving average indicator and pivot points.

Who Is Shorting WPP?

Disclosed short positions were large at the latest filings. Using each holder's latest disclosure on Investegate, eight funds hold about 5.8% of the share capital (own calculation). The latest entries date from July 2026 or earlier.

BlackRock Institutional Trust 0.50% 20 May 2026

Source: Investegate, WPP short positions. Disclosures of 0.5% or more only. Current positions may differ.

High WPP short interest can make moves sharper in both directions. A strong update may force some short sellers to buy back shares. A weak one may encourage more selling. The mechanics are explained in this guide to short selling.

WPP Takeover Speculation

Reports in late 2025 linked Havas and private equity firms to WPP assets. Havas chief executive Yannick Bolloré told staff that Havas was "not in discussions with WPP", as Storyboard18 reported. A WPP takeover has not been announced, and speculation alone is a weak basis for any view.

Macro Factors: Bank Rate and GBP/USD

Two macro factors matter for the stock. UK interest rates affect how investors value UK equities. The pound affects how WPP's overseas earnings translate into sterling.

  • Bank Rate stands at 3.75%, according to the Bank of England.
  • The next Bank of England rate decision is due on 5 November 2026, and the last of the year on 17 December.
  • North America made up about 37% of WPP's H1 2026 revenue (own calculation from the interim results).
  • WPP expects currency moves to cut FY2026 RLPTC by about 0.7% at a USD/GBP rate of 1.35.

A stronger pound tends to shrink the sterling value of dollar earnings. A weaker pound tends to do the opposite. Upcoming macro releases can be tracked on the Forex calendar.

Illustrative Scenarios for the Q3 Update

The scenarios below are illustrative only. They show how the share price could react under different outcomes. They are not predictions.

Scenario Possible trigger Possible share price reaction
Positive Q3 LFL decline of about 2% or less, margin guidance held, early sign of 2027 growth Could retest 400p to 412.6p, and short covering could add to the move
Neutral Q3 LFL decline of about 2% to 4%, guidance repeated, little new on 2027 May stay in the 362p to 400p range
Negative Q3 LFL decline worse than about 4%, new account losses or a margin guidance cut Could fall toward 362p, and then toward the 100-day average near 322p

Peer results may also move the stock before the update. Omnicom usually reports its third quarter in the second half of October. Its date had not been confirmed at the time of writing.

How to Trade WPP Shares with CFDs

There are two broad ways to gain exposure. Investors can buy the shares through a broker. Traders can also use contracts for difference (CFDs) to speculate on price moves in either direction.

What a WPP CFD Is

A WPP CFD tracks the price of the share without ownership of the stock. A position can be long or short. Leverage means both gains and losses are magnified. The concept is explained in this guide to CFD trading.

Admirals lists a WPP PLC CFD (#WPP) on its Trade.MT5 account. The contract page shows a commission of 0.1%, with a minimum of 100 GBX, and a number of commission-free trades per day. Other fees, such as overnight swaps, may apply.

Feature Owning WPP shares WPP CFD
Ownership You own the shares You hold a contract on the price
Direction Gain mainly when the price rises Long or short positions possible
Leverage Usually none Yes, gains and losses are magnified
Dividends Cash dividend paid Dividend adjustment on open positions
Costs Dealing fees and stamp duty Commission, spread and overnight financing

Admirals offers CFDs on shares and Forex. It also offers CFDs on indices and commodities. ETFs and shares are available too. More detail is on the share CFDs page. Trading takes place on platforms such as MetaTrader 5.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

Risk Management Habits Traders Often Use

Results days can bring sharp gaps. Traders often prepare in a few ways.

  • Many traders size positions so that a single loss stays small relative to their account.
