France is home to some of the biggest companies in Europe. Several of them also appear in our ranking of the biggest companies in Europe. In this article, we rank the largest companies in France first by market capitalisation and then by revenue.
We count only companies that are registered in France and listed on Euronext Paris. That rule leaves out Airbus and Stellantis, which are registered in the Netherlands. We cover them in separate notes below.
Market capitalisation figures were read from companiesmarketcap.com at about 10:30 Paris time (09:30 UK) on 22 October 2026. Market caps change every trading day, so the order may differ when you read this. Revenue and profit figures are full-year 2025 results from each company's own release.

Schneider Electric and Hermès were less than $3 billion apart at the time of writing, so their order can change from day to day. The gap between AXA and Sanofi was about $2.6 billion, so the bottom of the top 10 can also change quickly.

New Listings in 2026
The Paris market for new listings stayed fairly quiet in 2026. One of the better-known debuts was Le Slip Français, a French men's underwear brand. Its first day of trading on Euronext Growth was set for 14 July 2026, Tout sur mes finances reported. At group level, Euronext recorded 23 listings in the second quarter of 2026, Allnews noted.
The CAC 40: France's Benchmark Index
The CAC 40 is the main benchmark index for the French stock market. The name stands for Cotation Assistée en Continu, or continuous assisted quotation. The index tracks 40 of the most significant stocks among the 100 largest on Euronext Paris, according to Wikipedia.
How the CAC 40 Works
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Base value | 1,000 points on 31 December 1987 |
| Weighting | Free-float market cap since 1 December 2003 |
| Weight cap | 15% per company at each quarterly review |
| Reviews | Quarterly, in March, June, September and December |
| Type | Price index, so dividends are left out |

All ten companies in our market-cap ranking are CAC 40 companies, according to the list of CAC 40 constituents on Wikipedia. The index also holds groups registered outside France. Airbus and Stellantis are registered in the Netherlands, and ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg. This is why the CAC 40 list and a list of French-registered companies are slightly different.
Recent Changes to the Index
The composition of the CAC 40 has been stable through 2026. Eiffage joined the index in December 2025, replacing Edenred, Euronext announced. The September 2026 review left the CAC 40 unchanged, according to Euronext.
| Review | Outcome for the CAC 40 |
|---|---|
| December 2025 | Eiffage in, Edenred out |
| March 2026 | Unchanged |
| June 2026 | Unchanged |
| September 2026 | Unchanged |
| 10 December 2026 | Next quarterly review |

CAC 40 Level and 5-Year Performance

| Year | Year-end close | Annual change |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 7,153.03 | +28.85% |
| 2022 | 6,473.76 | -9.50% |

The five-year record shows two losing years out of five. Index levels can fall as well as rise. Traders who follow the index often watch the CAC 40 alongside the euro and French government bond yields.
The Largest French Companies by Market Cap
In the following sections, we look at each of the ten largest companies in France by market cap. Each entry starts with the market cap on 22 October 2026. A short business profile and the company's results for 2025 follow.
Market capitalisation is the total value of a company's shares. You can learn how it is calculated in our guide to market capitalisation.
1. L'Oréal
Market capitalisation = $242.8 billion
L'Oréal is a global cosmetics group. Its brands include L'Oréal Paris and Lancôme. It also owns mass-market and dermatology names such as Garnier and CeraVe. It became the most valuable company listed in Paris in September 2026.
| L'Oréal, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | €44.05bn | +1.3% reported, +4.0% like-for-like |
| Operating profit | €8.89bn | +2.4% |
| Operating margin | 20.2% | |
| Reported net profit | €6.13bn | -4.4% |
Source: L'Oréal Finance, 2025 annual results, 12 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
In 2026, L'Oréal's market value has held up better than LVMH's, as the five-year table below shows. Its sales growth was modest in 2025, though. A further slowdown in beauty spending could weigh on the shares.
2. LVMH
Market capitalisation = $212.8 billion
LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton is a global luxury group. Its fashion houses include Louis Vuitton and Dior. It also owns Moët & Chandon champagne and the Sephora beauty chain.
| LVMH, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | €80.8bn | -5% reported, -1% organic |
| Profit from recurring operations | €17.8bn | -9% |
| Net profit, group share | €10.9bn | -13% |
Source: LVMH, 2025 annual results, 27 January 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
The LVMH market cap fell from $369.45 billion at the end of 2025 to about $213 billion in October 2026, measured in US dollars. In euros, the shares had lost about 36% since the start of the year by 9 September, BFM Bourse reported. BFM Bourse linked the slide to the conflict in the Middle East. It also pointed to a slow recovery in Chinese consumer sentiment, in its 9 September report.
There were some signs of stabilisation in the third quarter. LVMH reported 9-month revenue of €57.1 billion, up 2% organically, in its Q3 2026 release. Its Fashion and Leather Goods division still fell 5% organically in the quarter.
| LVMH business group | Revenue, first 9 months of 2026 | Organic change, 9 months | Organic change, Q3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fashion and Leather Goods | €26.39bn | -2% | -5% |
| Selective Retailing | €12.48bn | +6% | +8% |
| Watches and Jewelry | €7.73bn | +8% | +6% |
| Perfumes and Cosmetics | €5.92bn | 0% | +1% |
| Wines and Spirits | €4.03bn | +5% | +6% |
| Total LVMH | €57.15bn | +2% | +1% |
Source: LVMH, Continued growth in the third quarter of 2026, 12 October 2026. The total also includes other activities and eliminations, so the rows do not add up to it. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
The table below compares the year-end market caps of the top two over five full years.
| Year-end | L'Oréal market cap | LVMH market cap |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $252.82bn | $414.55bn |
| 2022 | $190.52bn | $363.55bn |
| 2023 | $266.18bn | $408.47bn |
| 2024 | $191.94bn | $330.97bn |
| 2025 | $228.64bn | $369.45bn |
| 22 October 2026 | $242.72bn | $212.89bn |
Source: companiesmarketcap.com, L'Oréal market cap history and companiesmarketcap.com, LVMH market cap history. Period: end of 2021 to 22 October 2026, in US dollars, so exchange rates affect the figures. The 2026 values come from the company pages and may differ slightly from the ranking table because of timing. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
LVMH was the larger company at every year-end in this period. The change in 2026 shows how quickly a ranking can turn. It could also turn back if luxury demand recovers.
3. TotalEnergies
Market capitalisation = $199.2 billion
TotalEnergies is an integrated energy major. It produces oil and gas, sells liquefied natural gas (LNG) and runs a growing power and renewables business. Its shares trade in Paris and on the New York Stock Exchange.
| TotalEnergies, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | $201.2bn | about -6% |
| Revenues from sales | $182.3bn | -7% |
| Adjusted net income | $15.6bn | -15% |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $40.6bn | -6% |
Source: TotalEnergies, fourth quarter and full-year 2025 results, 11 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
TotalEnergies reports in US dollars, which is unusual among French groups. Its profits depend heavily on energy prices. Lower oil prices cut its 2025 earnings, and the same risk applies in future years.
4. Schneider Electric
Market capitalisation = $152.5 billion
Schneider Electric makes electrical equipment and energy management systems. It is also a major supplier of industrial automation tools. Data centres for artificial intelligence have become an important source of demand.
| Schneider Electric, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenues | €40.2bn | +5.2% reported, +8.9% organic |
| Adjusted EBITA | €7.52bn | +12.3% organic |
| Adjusted EBITA margin | 18.7% | |
| Net income | €4.16bn | -2% |
Source: Schneider Electric, FY2025 results, regulated filing via DILA, 26 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Revenue passed €40 billion for the first time in 2025. For 2026, the company targeted organic adjusted EBITA growth of 10% to 15%, according to the same release. Company targets can be missed, and forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future results. A slowdown in data-centre spending is one risk to that target.
5. Hermès
Market capitalisation = $149.7 billion
Hermès International is a maker of ultra-luxury goods. It is best known for leather bags such as the Birkin and the Kelly, as well as silk scarves.
| Hermès, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | €16.0bn | +5.5% at current rates, +8.9% at constant rates |
| Recurring operating income | €6.57bn | about +7% |
| Recurring operating margin | 41.0% | 40.5% in 2024 |
| Net profit | €4.52bn | slightly lower, due to a French exceptional tax |
Source: Hermès International, 2025 full-year results via MFN, 12 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Hermès has the highest operating margin in this list, at 41.0%. Its revenue also grew faster than LVMH's in 2025, when LVMH's organic revenue fell 1%. Shares of fast-growing luxury groups can be sensitive to any slowdown in growth.
6. Safran
Market capitalisation = $143.0 billion
Safran makes aircraft engines and aircraft equipment. Its best-known product is the LEAP engine, built with GE Aerospace through the CFM joint venture.
| Safran, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Adjusted revenue | €31.3bn | +14.7% reported, +14.8% organic |
| Recurring operating income | €5.2bn | +26.2% |
| Recurring operating margin | 16.6% | +150 basis points |
Source: Safran, 2025 full-year results, 13 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Safran grew its revenue faster than any other company in the top 10 in 2025. Supply-chain problems and any downturn in air traffic remain risks. Readers interested in the sector can also see our article on European defence stocks.
7. Air Liquide
Market capitalisation = $123.5 billion
Air Liquide supplies industrial and medical gases. Its customers range from steelmakers and chip factories to hospitals.
| Air Liquide, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | €26.94bn | -0.4% reported, +2.0% comparable |
| Recurring operating income | €5.58bn | +7.6% comparable |
| Operating margin | 20.7% | +80 basis points |
| Net profit, group share | €3.52bn | +6.4% |
Source: Air Liquide, 2025 results, 20 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Air Liquide raised its margin in 2025 even though reported revenue was flat. On a comparable basis, sales grew 2.0%. That measure strips out currency and energy price effects. Weak industrial demand in Europe is a risk for its volumes.
8. BNP Paribas
Market capitalisation = $103.8 billion
BNP Paribas is France's largest listed bank by market value, according to companiesmarketcap.com. It runs retail banks in several European countries. It also has a large corporate and investment banking arm.
| BNP Paribas, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Revenues | €51.2bn | +4.9% |
| Operating income | €16.3bn | +5.6% |
| Net income, group share | €12.2bn | +4.6% |
Source: BNP Paribas, fourth quarter and full-year 2025 results, 5 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Bank shares often react to interest rates and to credit quality. A rise in loan losses or tighter margins could weigh on the bank's profits.
9. AXA
Market capitalisation = $100.8 billion
AXA is a global insurance group. It sells property and casualty cover as well as life and health insurance. It also owns the specialist insurer AXA XL.
| AXA, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Gross written premiums and other revenues | €115.5bn | +6% comparable |
| Underlying earnings | €8.4bn | +4% reported, +6% at constant exchange rates |
| Net income | €9.8bn | +24% reported |
Source: AXA, full-year 2025 earnings, regulated filing via DILA, 26 February 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
AXA and Sanofi were only about $2.6 billion apart on the day of writing. Their places at ninth and tenth can swap from one session to the next. Large natural catastrophe claims are a key risk for any insurer.
10. Sanofi
Market capitalisation = $98.2 billion
Sanofi is a pharmaceutical and vaccines group. Its biggest product is the eczema and asthma drug Dupixent. Its American depositary receipts trade on Nasdaq.
| Sanofi, FY2025 | Value | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Sales | €43.6bn | +6.2% reported, +9.9% at constant exchange rates |
| Business operating income | €12.1bn | +7.1% |
| IFRS net income | €7.8bn | +40.5% |
Source: Sanofi, Q4 and full-year 2025 results, 29 January 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
Sanofi depends heavily on Dupixent. Trial results and drug pricing rules in the United States can move the shares sharply in either direction.
Note on Airbus
Airbus is often seen as a French company. Its operational headquarters are in Blagnac, near Toulouse. Its legal headquarters are in Leiden in the Netherlands, according to Wikipedia. That is why it sits outside our main ranking.
If we counted Airbus, it would rank fourth. Its market cap was about $174 billion in October 2026, according to companiesmarketcap.com. Sanofi would then drop out of the top 10. We also looked at the planemaker in our blog post on Airbus after its H1 earnings.
Who Could Join the Top 10?
| Company | Market cap (USD) | Gap to tenth place |
|---|---|---|
| EssilorLuxottica | $89.4bn | about $8.8bn |
| Christian Dior SE | $85.3bn | about $12.9bn |
| Vinci | $65.6bn | about $32.6bn |
| ENGIE | $65.3bn | about $32.9bn |
Source: companiesmarketcap.com, read at about 10:30 CEST on 22 October 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
EssilorLuxottica is the closest challenger. Christian Dior SE is mostly a holding company for its stake in LVMH, so including it would count the LVMH business again.
Market cap shows what investors are willing to pay for a company today. Revenue shows how much business it actually does. The two rankings often tell different stories.
What Has Driven the Ranking in 2026
Sector Mix of the Top 10
| Sector | Companies in the top 10 |
|---|---|
| Consumer and luxury | L'Oréal, LVMH, Hermès |
| Energy and materials | TotalEnergies, Air Liquide |
| Industrials and aerospace | Schneider Electric, Safran |
| Financials | BNP Paribas, AXA |
| Healthcare | Sanofi |

Tailwinds and Headwinds
| Possible tailwinds | Possible headwinds |
|---|---|
| A recovery in Chinese luxury demand could help LVMH and Hermès | A longer luxury slump could keep pressure on both groups |
| Spending on data centres has supported Schneider Electric | A pause in AI investment could slow that demand |
| Air travel growth has lifted Safran's engine business | Supply-chain problems could delay deliveries |
| A steeper yield curve could support bank margins | Lower interest rates could squeeze those margins |

The euro also matters. Our market caps are in US dollars. When the euro weakens against the dollar, French companies look smaller in dollar terms even if their share prices in euros are unchanged.
The Biggest Companies in France by Revenue
Now that we have seen the largest French companies by market cap, what about revenue? The table below ranks French-registered listed companies by revenue for full-year 2025. Only three of the five also appear in the market-cap top 10.
| Rank | Company | Revenue in 2025 | In the market-cap top 10? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TotalEnergies | $201.2bn sales | Yes, third |
| 2 | AXA | €115.5bn gross written premiums and other revenues | Yes, ninth |
| 3 | Carrefour | €91.5bn sales including VAT (€82.1bn net sales) | Outside the top 10 |
| 4 | LVMH | €80.8bn | Yes, second |
| 5 | Vinci | €74.6bn | Outside the top 10 |
Source: TotalEnergies, AXA, Retail Insight Network on Carrefour, LVMH and Vinci, full-year 2025 results. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
TotalEnergies leads by a wide margin. Each figure is in the company's own reporting currency, and AXA's figure is made up mostly of insurance premiums. Carrefour, the supermarket chain, is the only retailer in the top five. Vinci runs motorways and airports and also has a large construction business. Its revenue rose 4.2% in 2025, according to its annual release.
Larger Groups Outside the Ranking
Some groups with higher revenue are excluded by our rule. The table below shows where they would fit.
| Company | Revenue in 2025 | Why it is excluded |
|---|---|---|
| Stellantis | €153.5bn net revenues | Registered in the Netherlands |
| EDF | €113.3bn sales | Unlisted and fully state-owned |
| Airbus | €73.4bn | Registered in the Netherlands |
Source: Stellantis, full-year 2025 results, EDF, 2025 annual results and Wikipedia, Airbus. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
If counted, Stellantis would rank second. EDF, at €113.3 billion, would sit just below AXA. Stellantis has its headquarters in Hoofddorp in the Netherlands, according to Wikipedia. EDF left the stock market in 2023 and is now 100% owned by the French state, Wikipedia notes.
Bank revenue is measured differently from the sales of an industrial company. BNP Paribas reported revenues of €51.2 billion for 2025, which would place it outside the top five.
Market Cap and Revenue Compared
| Company | Market-cap rank | Revenue rank |
|---|---|---|
| TotalEnergies | 3 | 1 |
| AXA | 9 | 2 |
| Carrefour | Outside top 10 | 3 |
| LVMH | 2 | 4 |
| Vinci | Outside top 10 | 5 |
| L'Oréal | 1 | Outside top 5 |

Ways to Gain Exposure to French Stocks
Traders who follow the largest French stocks use a few different routes. Admirals offers CFDs on shares and indices. It also offers real shares and ETFs through its Invest.MT5 account.
| Route | Possible advantages | Possible drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Real shares, such as TotalEnergies via Invest.MT5 | You own the shares and may receive dividends | The value of your shares can fall, and you may get back less than you invested |

| CFD on the CAC 40 cash index | One position covers the whole index | Index moves can be fast around news |

You can read more about index CFDs on our index CFDs page and in our guide to index trading. All of these instruments are available on MetaTrader 5. Trading costs apply to each route and reduce any returns. CFD positions held open overnight also incur funding charges.
CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.
Practising First
Some traders first test their approach on a demo account. A demo account uses virtual funds, and results may differ from live trading.
