Germany 40 Outlook November 2026: Index Holds Near 26,000 as Oil and the ECB Set the Tone

The Germany 40 index closed at 25,864.62 points on Tuesday 3 November 2026, according to finanzen.net. That leaves Germany's benchmark about 5.6% higher for 2026 so far, after a fall to 21,863.81 in March. It sits around 2.8% below the Germany 40 record high of 26,618.74, set on 28 August 2026. Early on 4 November, the index traded near 26,030 at about 10:00 CET (09:00 UK time). Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

Oil and interest rates explain most of the recent moves. Brent crude has eased on hopes of progress in US and Iran talks. The European Central Bank (ECB) is widely expected to raise rates again on 17 December. This guide covers the key numbers and the Germany 40 support and resistance levels. It also sets out the forecasts and the calendar.

What Is the Germany 40 Index?

The Germany 40 is Germany's blue-chip share index. It tracks the 40 largest German companies by market value and trading turnover on the Frankfurt exchange. Its base value of 1,000 points was set at the end of 1987 (finanzen.net).

Traders know it under several names. Brokers often list it as GER40, and some data providers use the code DE40. Older material still calls it the Germany 30, because it had 30 members until it was enlarged.

How the Germany 40 Is Calculated

The Germany 40 is a performance index. STOXX notes that dividends are counted in the index level. Many other national benchmarks are quoted as price indices, which leave dividends out. Comparisons with price indices elsewhere should keep this in mind.

Germany 40 Index Composition: The 10 Largest Members

The Germany 40 index composition is concentrated at the top. The ten biggest members make up about 65% of the index, by our sum of the weights below.

Company Sector Weight
Siemens Industrials 11.71%
SAP Technology 10.81%
Allianz Insurance 9.17%
Siemens Energy Industrials 7.11%
Airbus Industrials 6.49%

Germany 40 Sector Weights

Industrials carry more than a quarter of the index. That gives the Germany 40 a strong link to global trade and defence spending. Technology is the second-largest block. SAP and Infineon lead it.

Supersector Weight
Industrial goods and services 26.9%
Technology 15.6%
Insurance 13.7%

Carmakers now weigh only about 4%. Headlines about BMW or Volkswagen can move sentiment. Their direct effect on the index level is smaller than many expect.

What Is Moving the Germany 40 in 2026?

Five forces explain most of the moves this year. Oil comes first. Interest rates follow closely. German growth and the budget matter too, as do company earnings.

Oil and the US and Iran Conflict

Energy prices have been the main swing factor since the conflict involving Iran began in late February. On 20 March, the Germany 40 closed about 2% lower at 22,380, its lowest level since April 2025. Traders were weighing the risk of a longer energy crisis (Trading Economics).

Brent crude traded at about $103.7 a barrel on the morning of 4 November (CET), roughly 63% higher than a year earlier. It was down about 8% on the week, as Qatar's mediators presented new proposals to Washington and Tehran (Trading Economics).

For Germany, cheaper oil tends to ease cost pressure on industry. Lower energy prices can also cool inflation fears and rate-hike bets. In 2026, falls in Brent crude have at times coincided with firmer Germany 40 trading, though the link can break down.

ECB Tightening and Lagarde's Early Exit

The energy shock pushed the ECB into a tightening cycle. It raised rates in June 2026 for the first time since 2023 (The Irish Times). A second hike followed in September (XTB).

On 29 October, the ECB held its deposit rate at 2.5% (XTB). Euro area inflation reached 3.8% in September, its highest since September 2023, with energy prices up 18.9% (Trading Economics).

ECB President Christine Lagarde will step down on 7 February 2027, before her term ends (Banque de France). Choosing a Lagarde successor adds a layer of uncertainty to policy guidance.

US Federal Reserve 3.75% to 4.00% Hold, 28 Oct 2026 9 Dec 2026

Sources: XTB on the ECB, XTB on the Fed, ECB meeting calendar and Federal Reserve FOMC calendar.

Kapitalmarktexperten wrote on 30 October that markets see a high chance that both the ECB and the Fed raise rates in December (Kapitalmarktexperten). Our earlier note on the October ECB meeting covers the decision in more detail.

How Does the Germany 40 React to the ECB?

Higher rates raise the discount rate applied to future profits. They also lift bond yields, which compete with shares for investors' money. Rate-sensitive sectors such as property and utilities can be hit hardest by hawkish surprises.

Banks and insurers can react differently, because higher rates may support their margins. The overall reaction usually depends on whether a hike was already priced in.

The US Fed and the Midterms

The Fed left its range at 3.75% to 4.00% on 28 October, after a hike in September (XTB). US midterm results were still coming in at the time of writing, about 10:00 CET on 4 November.

Before the vote, Kapitalmarktexperten reported that market watchers worried less about the result than about the White House reaction (Kapitalmarktexperten). Merck Finck's chief strategist Robert Greil saw a risk of swift foreign policy moves after the vote. Commerzbank pointed out that the S&P 500 has, on average, done better under divided government since 1969, according to the same report. Past patterns like this may not repeat.

The German Economy: Weak but Growing

German data have been soft, though they have held up better than feared. The table shows the latest readings.

The ifo business climate October 2026 reading rose for another month. The current situation index slipped from 89.5 to 88.8, so firms are more hopeful about the future than about today. You can read more on the inflation trend in our analysis of German HICP for September 2026.

Berlin's Spending Plans

The German budget 2027 plans heavy spending, which may support domestic demand. The cabinet approved the draft on 6 July 2026.

Budget item (2027 draft) Amount
Total spending €555.4 billion
Total new borrowing €203.6 billion
Core budget borrowing €118.7 billion
Infrastructure fund borrowing €54.9 billion
Special defence fund borrowing €30 billion
Core defence spending €109 billion (2026: €82.2 billion)
Total investment €117.5 billion
Planned borrowing 2027 to 2030 €838.2 billion

Industrial groups such as Siemens Energy and Airbus are directly exposed to defence and infrastructure spending. The flip side is more government borrowing, which can push up Bund yields over time.

Germany 40 Earnings Season

Earnings forecasts have been cut this year. In April, Uwe Hohmann of Metzler said consensus growth for Germany 40 earnings in 2026 had fallen from 15% to around 5% (Deutsche Börse).

This week brings a busy run of reports. BMW and Continental were due on 4 November. Deutsche Telekom and Commerzbank follow on 5 November, with Rheinmetall on the same morning (Deutsche Börse). Siemens, the largest member, reports on 12 November (Siemens).

Germany 40 Performance in Context

The 2026 gain looks modest after a strong run. It came after a sharp fall in March. The Germany 40 dropped to 21,863.81 on 23 March, as the energy shock hit sentiment, then climbed about 22% to its August record (finanzen.net). Since then it has moved sideways in a range of roughly 24,800 to 26,600.

Germany 40 5 Year Performance

The table shows the last five full calendar years. The Germany 40 had one losing year in this period, a drop of about 12% in 2022.

Year Year-end close Annual change
2021 15,884.86 +15.8%
2022 13,923.59 -12.3%
2023 16,751.64 +20.3%
2024 19,909.14 +18.8%

Deutsche Börse puts the Germany 40 average annual return since 1987 at 11.2% (Deutsche Börse). Because the Germany 40 is a performance index, these figures include reinvested dividends. They are shown before taxes and costs, which may vary.

STOXX data to 30 September 2026 show an annualised return of 10.7% over five years and 18.4% over three years (STOXX). These figures are also before taxes and costs, which may vary. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

Sources: finanzen.net, Trading Economics and Tagesspiegel. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

The Germany 40 sits within 3% of its record, yet by April 2026 earnings growth estimates had fallen from 15% to about 5%. With profit forecasts trimmed, much of the next move may depend on oil prices and the ECB.

Germany 40 Technical Analysis: Support and Resistance

Charts give traders a map of where buyers and sellers have been active. The levels below come from published technical commentary. They are reference points and carry their own uncertainty.

On 30 October, stock3 analyst Rocco Gräfe gave a path towards 26,575 a probability of about 60%. He also named 27,750 as the next target after a break of the record (stock3). That view requires 25,915, 25,700 and 25,500 to hold. This is one analyst's view and it may prove wrong.

The Germany 40 200 Day Moving Average

The Germany 40 200 day moving average has acted as a floor this autumn. In early October the index reached the 200-day line near 24,850 and then rose by more than 1,000 points (stock3). Our guide to the moving average indicator explains how these lines are built.

Germany 40 Volatility

The German volatility index measures the implied volatility of the Germany 40 over the next 30 days. It stood at 18.86 on 30 October (stock3). Readings near 20 point to a market that expects wider daily swings than in calm periods.

What Traders Often Watch at Key Levels

  • Many traders look for an hourly or daily close above 26,100 before treating a breakout as confirmed.
  • Some wait to see whether a pullback holds near 25,700.
  • Some analysts read a close below 25,500 as a sign that the range could widen to the downside.
  • Volume and the reaction to news usually matter more than a single touch of a level.

Germany 40 Forecast 2026 and 2027

Forecasts for the Germany 40 vary widely. Each depends on its own assumptions. Oil and interest rates are the usual inputs. Profit estimates matter as well.

Sources: MarketScreener / dpa-AFX, Trading Economics, Finanzradar and stock3. Forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future performance.

The Bloomberg average of 26,350 dates from January. It is about 1.9% above the 3 November close, by our calculation. The Trading Economics model points slightly lower, near 25,353 by year end. Its 12-month figure is lower still, at about 23,180. The spread of views shows how uncertain the Germany 40 outlook 2026 remains.

Is the Germany 40 Overvalued?

STOXX data put the projected price to earnings ratio at 16.2 at the end of September. Whether that looks moderate depends on profit estimates holding up.

Measure (30 Sep 2026) Germany 40
Price to earnings, trailing 18.7
Price to earnings, projected 16.2
Price to book 2.0
Dividend yield 2.1%

Source: STOXX index factsheet. The dividend yield is shown before taxes and costs, which may vary. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

The Germany 40 PE ratio relies on profit estimates that have already been trimmed. In April, Metzler's Uwe Hohmann said the Germany 40 did not look expensive to him, though that view rested heavily on still very optimistic profit estimates (Deutsche Börse). If those estimates fall, the index could look more expensive at the same price.

Scenarios for the Germany 40 into Year End

The scenarios below are illustrative. They show how different outcomes could affect the index, and none of them is a prediction.

Germany 40 Bull Case

A lasting deal between the US and Iran could pull Brent lower. Softer inflation could lead the ECB to signal that December is the last hike. In that case, a move through 26,100 and the record zone near 26,600 may come into view.

Base Case: A Range into December

In this case, the ECB raises rates on 17 December, as markets expect. Oil stays volatile but contained. The Germany 40 could then keep trading between about 25,000 and 26,600.

Germany 40 Bear Case

Renewed fighting in the Gulf could send oil sharply higher again. That might lift inflation and rate expectations. A break below 25,500 could then open the way to the 200-day lines near 24,900, and possibly the March lows in a severe case.

Scenario Possible triggers Levels in focus
Bull (illustrative) Progress in US and Iran talks and softer euro area inflation Above 26,100, then 26,575 to 26,619
Base (illustrative) ECB hikes as priced while oil stays range-bound 25,000 to 26,600
Bear (illustrative) Renewed escalation with an oil spike and more ECB hikes priced Below 25,500, then 24,900

Scenarios are illustrative and based on the drivers and levels sourced in this article. Forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Risk Habits Many Germany 40 Traders Follow

  • Many traders check the economic calendar before each session.
  • Many traders confirm the contract size and the value of one point before opening a position.
  • Some traders decide in advance where a trade idea is wrong and use a stop-loss order at that level.
  • Position sizes are often kept small enough to absorb a sharp adverse move.
  • Stop-loss orders can slip in fast markets, so an exit may come at a worse price than planned.
  • Some traders review open positions before major releases such as the ECB decision.

Our article on risk management covers these habits in detail. These steps can help manage risk, though they cannot remove it.
