Starbucks Ownership Structure

Starbucks was founded in 1971 in Seattle by three entrepreneurs: Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker. At the time, the company was inspired by Peet’s Coffee & Tea, whose owner (Alfred Peet) shared the coffee trade with Baldwin, and sold only coffee beans and coffee-making devices. In Starbucks’ first operating year, the company used to source their coffee beans from Peet’s Coffee & Tea but later went on to source them directly from farmers. In 1987, thanks to the company’s ownership change, Starbucks expanded its product range to include coffee and other related beverages, instead of only coffee beans.

In 1991, Starbucks decided to open the gates for employees to invest in the company and become shareholders. A year later the company truly went public with its IPO and listed its 2,100,000 outstanding shares. Each share at the time sold for between $14.00 and $16.00. However, Starbucks stock (SBUX) has grown since then, with the company now having 1,132,800,000 outstanding shares, priced at $91.56 per share.

As Starbucks is a publicly owned company, both institutional and individual investors have had their chance to invest in the company. The biggest institutional shareholders are mostly investment companies and asset management firms. The biggest individual Starbucks shareholders, on the other hand, are insiders and former employees with high-ranking positions.
