Key Takeaways

  • Barclays is a multinational universal bank with current annual revenue of around 25 billion GBP
  • Barclays provides services such as wealth and investment management, lending, and mortgages.
  • The bank currently has about 14.7 billion outstanding shares.
  • Barclays' major shareholders have considerable influence when it comes to decisions regarding topics such as expansion and the handling of financial crises.

Barclays Ownership History

The origin of Barclays dates back to 1690, when two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, started trading in London. Freame’s son-in-law, James Barclay, was taken on as a partner in 1736 and that is how the bank got its name. The bank offered services such as the safekeeping of valuables, providing loans and issuing banknotes.

The banking services of Barclays gradually expanded between the 1700s and 1900s. Barclays grew significantly, especially after merging with several smaller banks in 1896 and with London Provincial and South Western Bank in 1918. In 1967 Barclays introduced the world's first ATM, located in London.

Barclays was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1987. The capital that followed the IPO, allowed the bank to expand and diversify services further. International investors followed when the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1986. This did not only attract investors but also paved the way to expand internationally and become a major player in the global financial market.

Shareholders of the company include individual investors and employees, but Barclays' major shareholders are institutional investors, mainly asset management firms and pension funds. As they hold big percentages of shares, they have considerable influence when it comes to decisions regarding topics such as expansion and financial crises.

Barclays is dual-listed with shares on the London Stock Exchange (BARC) and the New York Stock Exchange (BCS).
