USDTUSD Explained: Tether's Dollar Peg and Its Risks in October 2026

USDTUSD measures the price of Tether USDT in US dollars. On 12 October 2026 at about 08:50 UTC (09:50 BST), USDT traded at $0.9992 on CoinGecko. That is a small discount to its $1.00 target. Market capitalisation stood at about $184.1 billion, around 60% of all stablecoins, according to DefiLlama.

The headline price is designed to move very little. The real questions concern the tails. USDT has traded well below $1 before, and its issuer holds riskier assets alongside US Treasury bills. Regulators in the EU and the US are also reshaping where USDT can be offered.

Cryptoassets are highly volatile, and a stablecoin can trade below its $1.00 target. Crypto CFDs are high-risk leveraged products, and you could lose all of the capital you invest.

This guide explains how the Tether peg works and what backs it. It covers the reserve data and the depeg record. It also sets out the regulatory calendar. It closes with the facts about crypto CFDs that Admirals has published, together with their risks.

Why Is USDT Trading Slightly Below $1?

A discount of about 0.1% has been common for USDT in recent months. Daily closes ran between 0.9991 and 1.0003 from 6 August to 6 September 2026, with an average of 0.9997, according to Investing.com. The period high was 1.0007 and the low was 0.9989.

Small gaps from par usually reflect supply and demand on exchanges. Direct redemption at $1.00 is open only to verified Tether customers. Fees apply, and so do minimum amounts, per eco.com. Most holders therefore exit through the market, where prices float a little around the target.

What Moved in the Last Month?

  • USDT supply grew 0.33% over the 30 days to 12 October 2026, per DefiLlama.
  • The total stablecoin market rose 0.80% over 30 days and fell 0.31% over seven days.
  • USDT vs USDC diverged, with USDC supply down 1.86% over 30 days to $73.06bn.
  • Investing.com shows a 30 September 2026 close of 0.9995.

What Is USDT and How Does Tether Work?

What is USDT? It is a stablecoin, a crypto token designed to track the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio. The Tether group issues it on several blockchains. Only verified Tether customers can redeem USDT directly with the issuer, per eco.com. USDT is not a bank deposit.

USDT carries neither deposit insurance nor investor compensation cover. Its value depends on the issuer's reserves and on the issuer honouring redemptions. It also depends on market confidence.

How Does USDT Keep Its Peg?

The peg rests on three linked mechanisms.

  1. Verified customers can create new USDT by sending dollars to Tether, or redeem USDT for dollars.
  2. Arbitrage traders with verified accounts can buy USDT below $1 and redeem it at par.
  3. They can also create USDT at par and sell it when it trades above $1.

When both channels work, the gap from $1.00 has tended to stay small. When confidence or redemption access weakens, the gap can widen quickly.

What Is a Depeg?

What is a depeg? It is a period when a stablecoin trades materially away from its target. For USDT, stress episodes since 2018 have pushed the price down to about $0.92 to $0.97. CoinMarketCap data show a low of $0.5683 in the thinly traded market of 2015. Brief premiums above $1 have also appeared on single exchanges.

Mechanism What it does What can disrupt it
Primary creation and redemption Links USDT supply to dollars held in reserve Fees, minimums, banking delays or a pause by the issuer
Exchange arbitrage Pulls the market price back towards $1.00 Thin liquidity, frozen addresses or exchange outages
Reserve backing Supports confidence in the $1 claim Falls in Bitcoin, gold or loan values
Market confidence Keeps holders from rushing to exit Legal, regulatory or sanctions news

What Is USDT Backed By? Tether Reserves in Q2 2026

The latest reserve report is the BDO Italia attestation as of 30 June 2026, published on 31 July 2026. It showed assets of $187.75 billion against liabilities of $183.64 billion, according to ForkLog. Crowdfund Insider reported the same totals.

Reserve asset (30 June 2026) Value Share of total assets
US Treasury bills $114.96bn 61.2%
Reverse repurchase agreements $25.62bn 13.6%
Gold (146.2 tonnes) $18.84bn 10.0%
Secured loans $13.45bn 7.2%
Bitcoin (98,933 BTC) $5.80bn 3.1%
Other assets $9.08bn 4.8%
Total assets $187.75bn 100%
Total liabilities (USDT issued) $183.64bn 97.8%

Tether Excess Reserves Halved in Q2

Tether excess reserves fell to $4.11 billion at 30 June 2026, down from $8.23 billion at the end of March. That cushion equals about 2.2% of liabilities. Lower Bitcoin and gold prices drove most of the decline, per ForkLog.

Tether still reported a Q2 net operating profit of about $1.5 billion, excluding revaluation. Its result for January to June was a loss of $3.17 billion in the capital-change table, per ForkLog.

Reporting date Total assets Excess reserves Treasury exposure
31 Dec 2025 $193bn $6.3bn $122bn
31 Mar 2026 Not in cited sources $8.23bn Not in cited sources
30 Jun 2026 $187.75bn $4.11bn $114.96bn (T-bills only)

Source: The Block and ForkLog, accessed 12 October 2026. Definitions of Treasury exposure differ between reports. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

Bitcoin and Gold in the Reserves

Tether bitcoin holdings stood at 98,933 BTC on 30 June 2026, valued at $5.8 billion. Tether gold reserves totalled 146.2 tonnes, valued at $18.84 billion at $4,008.02 per ounce. Both figures come from the attestation summary by ForkLog.

These holdings add price risk to the reserve pool. A sharp fall in either metal or crypto prices shrinks the excess buffer directly.

Is Tether Audited?

Is tether audited? Tether publishes quarterly ISAE 3000 attestations by BDO Italia. An attestation checks reserves at a single point in time. A full audit examines controls and records over a whole period. In August 2026 Tether said a Big Four audit is ongoing, per Crowdfund Insider.

USDT Market Cap and Supply

USDT is the largest stablecoin by a wide margin. The table compares it with its main rival and with the whole sector.

Stablecoin data (12 Oct 2026) Market cap 30-day change
USDT (Tether) $184.06bn +0.33%

Tron $92.4bn 50%
Ethereum $73.6bn 40%
BNB Smart Chain $9.2bn 5%

  • USDT supply peaked at about $187bn to $189.5bn in early 2026, and sources differ on the exact figure.
  • Tether burned 3bn USDT in January and 3.5bn in early February during a crypto sell-off, per Stablecoin Insider.
  • Supply rose by $446m in Q2 to $184.6bn, according to ForkLog.
  • In late July the stablecoin sector posted its largest monthly decline since May 2022.
  • Supply stood at $183.8bn on 1 October 2026.

USDT Depeg History: When the Peg Slipped

Has USDT ever depegged? Yes. USDT has traded materially below $1 several times. Most episodes were linked to wider stress in crypto or in Tether's banking links.

Date Approximate low Context
2 March 2015 $0.5683 Early, thinly traded era (aggregator data)
October 2018 About $0.92 Concerns over Bitfinex banking access
March 2020 About $0.97 Market-wide sell-off at the start of the pandemic
12 May 2022 About $0.95 Contagion from the Terra collapse

Source: CoinMarketCap, eco.com and Nairametrics, accessed 12 October 2026. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

The price recovered towards $1 after each of these episodes. That record says nothing certain about future episodes. A depeg can also be deeper or longer than any seen so far.

USDT 5-Year Price Record

Yearly price changes for USDT sit close to zero, as intended. The more useful figure is the intra-year low, which shows how far the peg slipped in each year.

Year Year-end close Annual change Intra-year low
2021 $1.0013 +0.02% $0.9690
2022 $1.0000 -0.13% $0.9493
2023 $1.0002 +0.02% $0.9900
2024 $0.9985 -0.17% $0.9985 or lower (CoinLore shows $1.00, rounded)
2025 About $1.00 (rounded) About +0.15% (approximate) $0.9894

Source: year-end closes for 2021 to 2024 from Statista; 2025 close and yearly lows from CoinLore, accessed 12 October 2026. Period covered is the five full calendar years from January 2021 to December 2025. The 2021 change uses the 2020 close of $1.0011. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

A stablecoin's yearly price change says little about its risk. The risk shows up in the depth of a depeg, and USDT fell to about $0.92 in 2018 and to $0.5683 in the early market of 2015.

Ratings and Regulation

S&P Tether Downgrade

S&P Global cut its USDT stability assessment to 5, labelled "weak", on 26 November 2025. This is the lowest score on its scale. S&P cited Bitcoin exposure of 5.6% of USDT in circulation against an overcollateralisation margin of 3.9%, per Yahoo Finance. S&P also put high-risk assets at 24% of reserves and flagged limited disclosure.

Is USDT Regulated in the EU?

Is USDT regulated? As of 12 October 2026, USDT is not authorised in the EU under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Tether did not seek e-money token authorisation, according to CoinPaprika on 14 June 2026. Major exchanges therefore restricted or delisted USDT for EEA users.

As of 2 October 2026, none of the implementing rules was final, per CryptoTicker. On 21 July 2026 CoinPaprika reported that Tether's own disclosures put about 25% of USDT reserves in assets the Act would not accept as reserves. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino has said the company will comply with the Act, the same CoinPaprika report notes.

Tether News: October 2026

Senate Report on Iran-Linked Wallets

A Democratic staff report from the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations was published on 28 September 2026. It analysed 846 sanctioned or blocked Iran-linked wallets, as reported by The Block. The Block reports that 87% of 757 terrorism-finance-linked wallets in that sample transacted mainly in USDT. Tether says it helped freeze about $550 million of Iran-linked USDT over the past year. The report sets out allegations, which are not findings by a court.

Blumenthal Letter to Cantor Fitzgerald

On 8 October 2026 Senator Richard Blumenthal wrote to the chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald, which reportedly custodies most Tether reserves. The letter notes Cantor's stake of about 5% in Tether and asks for answers by 23 October 2026, per Decrypt. It is a request for information, which differs from a subpoena or a finding of wrongdoing.

Conduit Lawsuit Over Frozen USDT

Payments firm Conduit sued Tether in the Southern District of New York around 5 October 2026. The claim concerns $2.76 million in USDT frozen for more than a year, per The Block. The court has not ruled on the claims. The case shows that the issuer can freeze tokens at specific addresses.

USDT on Bitcoin via Utexo

USDT on Bitcoin is due to launch in October 2026 through Utexo, using the RGB protocol. Lightning Network support is planned later, according to CoinDesk. Tether also reports more than 650 million users, up by more than 30 million in Q2, per ForkLog.

USDT and the Crypto Market

USDT is the main settlement currency on many offshore crypto exchanges. Its supply has often shrunk during crypto sell-offs, as in February 2026. BTC/USD traded at $83,499.55 at 00:08 EDT on 12 October 2026, per CoinDesk.

Bitcoin closed at $83,278.50 in US trading on 7 October, about 33% below a year earlier. Its all-time high above $126,000 came on 6 October 2025, as covered in the Admirals article on why BTC/USD fell for a fourth day. Weaker Bitcoin prices also cut the value of Tether's Bitcoin reserves.

Fed Rates and Tether Profits

Most Tether profit comes from Treasury bill and repo income. Lower US interest rates would therefore tend to reduce its earnings, though they do not change the peg mechanics directly. The next FOMC decisions are due on 28 October and 9 December 2026, per the Federal Reserve. Tether reported a net profit above $10 billion for 2025, per The Block.

Crypto CFDs at Admirals: What Is Verified

Admirals offers CFDs on more than 20 cryptocurrencies, as shown on its cryptocurrency CFD product page. The coins are quoted against the US dollar or the euro, and some against Bitcoin. Named examples include Bitcoin and Ethereum pairs. A USDTUSD CFD is not listed on the public product pages, and this article does not imply that one is available.

Product availability depends on your country of residence and client category. Retail clients in the UK cannot trade crypto derivatives. The FCA said on 1 August 2025 that its ban on retail access to cryptoasset derivatives, in force since January 2021, will remain in place, per the FCA.

What Is a Crypto CFD?

What is a crypto CFD? A contract for difference lets a trader speculate on price moves without owning the coin. Trading a CFD does not give ownership of the underlying token. The Admirals guide to CFD trading explains the mechanics. The guide on how to trade Bitcoin CFDs covers the crypto side.

Crypto CFD Leverage and Costs

Commissions are listed in the contract specifications. MetaTrader 5 is one of the platforms that offers crypto CFDs in jurisdictions where the product is available.

Pros and Cons of Crypto CFDs

Pros Cons
Exposure to price moves in both directions Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains
Markets open 24/7 Prices can gap over weekends and overnight
Coin custody and wallets are not needed The trader does not own the underlying token
Margin lowers the capital tied up per position Spreads can widen sharply in volatile markets
Several platforms and a mobile app Holding costs build up on positions kept open

Source: Admirals summary of the cryptocurrency CFD Key Information Document, accessed 12 October 2026.

Crypto CFD Risks to Understand

  • Leverage magnifies losses, even on small price moves.
  • Spreads can widen sharply when markets are volatile or thin.
  • Crypto markets trade 24/7, so prices can jump between sessions and over weekends.
  • Holding costs and commissions can exceed the expected move in a low-volatility asset.
  • A sudden depeg can produce price gaps that skip past stop-loss levels.
  • A CFD position is a contract with the provider, and it gives the trader a claim against that provider only.

CFDs are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly due to leverage. You should consider whether you understand how CFDs work and whether you can afford to take the high risk of losing your money.

A high share of retail investor accounts lose money when trading CFDs, and you could lose all of the capital you invest. The risk management guide and the article on how leverage works explain ways to manage risk.
