Spain Inflation Rate Hits 4.9% in September 2026: What It Means for the ECB

Marketing communication. This content does not constitute independent investment research.

The Spain inflation rate rose to 4.9% in September 2026, according to the INE flash estimate published on 29 September. It was 4.3% in August. Economists had pencilled in 4.6%. Spain HICP, the harmonised measure the ECB targets, reached 5.0%. Both readings are the highest since February 2023.

Spain core inflation climbed to 3.1% from 2.9%. Fuel prices did most of the lifting, and package holidays added a smaller push. Several banks, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, have said they expect the ECB to pause in October and hike to 2.75% in December. Market pricing on 29 September pointed to roughly even odds for an October move.

Be On The Edge

Spain Inflation September 2026 at a Glance

The table sums up Spain inflation today. It compares the flash data with August and with the market forecast.

Measure September 2026 (flash) August 2026 Forecast
Spain CPI, year on year 4.9% 4.3% 4.6%
Spain HICP, year on year 5.0% 4.6% 4.9%
CPI, month on month 0.3% 0.7% n/a
HICP, month on month 0.6% 0.7% n/a
Core CPI, year on year 3.1% 2.9% 3.0%

Sources: INE flash estimate of 29 September 2026 and INE CPI data. Forecasts were compiled by market data providers before the release. Some providers showed 4.7% for CPI.

When Is Spain Inflation Released?

INE publishes the flash estimate at the end of each reference month. The release comes at 09:00 Madrid time, which was 07:00 UTC in September. The final figure with the full breakdown follows about two weeks later. For September, INE plans to publish it on 14 October.

Spain Inflation Actual vs Forecast: How Big Was the Surprise?

The miss was 0.3 points on the national CPI measure. On the harmonised HICP it was 0.1 points.

Measure Actual Forecast Surprise
CPI, year on year 4.9% 4.6% +0.3 percentage points
HICP, year on year 5.0% 4.9% +0.1 percentage points
Core CPI, year on year 3.1% 3.0% +0.1 percentage points
CPI, month on month 0.3% n/a n/a

The ECB targets HICP. On that measure the miss was only 0.1 percentage points. This helps explain the calm market reaction.

Core inflation matters more for the ECB debate. It strips out energy and unprocessed food, so it shows whether price pressure is spreading. At 3.1%, the core rate is the highest since March 2024.

Why Was Spain Inflation Higher Than Expected?

INE points to two drivers. Fuel prices rose this September, while they fell in September 2025. Package holidays also got cheaper by less than they did a year ago. Apparently even holiday prices refused to take a holiday this year.

Spain Inflation Drivers in September 2026

Fuel and the Base Effect

A base effect happens when last year's price moves shape this year's annual rate. In September 2025 Spanish consumer prices fell 0.3% on the month. This year they rose 0.3%. That gap of about 0.6 points matches the jump in the annual rate from 4.3% to 4.9%.

Spain diesel prices were already 30.3% higher on the year in August. Petrol was up 16.9%. The ECB has also pointed to strong refining margins for diesel.

Electricity and PVPC

Spain's regulated power tariff, PVPC, passes wholesale costs to households quickly. The 30-day average price on the OMIE wholesale market was about €141 per MWh in late September. The August average was €121.36 per MWh. Spain electricity prices therefore reach CPI faster than in many other euro area countries.

Services and Core Prices

Spain services inflation was 3.9% in August, according to Funcas. Processed food inflation slowed to 1.6%. So far, second-round effects are clearest in services.

The main forces behind the September figure were these.

  • Fuel prices rose after falling a year earlier.
  • Package holidays fell less than in September 2025.
  • Core inflation rose to 3.1%, which points to wider price pressure.
  • Consumer prices have now risen month on month for eight months in a row.

Spain Inflation Trend 2026: Month by Month

Spain inflation has more than doubled since February. The war with Iran began on 28 February 2026 and pushed energy prices sharply higher.

Month CPI Core CPI HICP
September 2025 3.0% 2.4% n/a
February 2026 2.3% 2.7% n/a
March 2026 3.4% 2.9% 3.4%
April 2026 3.2% 2.8% 3.5%
May 2026 3.2% 3.0% 3.6%
June 2026 3.2% 2.9% 3.6%
July 2026 3.6% 3.0% 3.9%
August 2026 4.3% 2.9% 4.6%
September 2026 (flash) 4.9% 3.1% 5.0%

Sources: INE flash estimate for August 2026 and INE monthly data for CPI and core CPI. Eurostat for HICP. September figures are flash estimates.

Two facts stand out. The annual rate has now risen for three months in a row. The gap with the euro area has also widened.

Spain vs Eurozone Inflation

Spain now runs well ahead of the other large euro area economies. The table uses final Eurostat data for August, the latest month with full country figures.

Area HICP, August 2026 HICP, August 2025
Spain 4.6% 2.7%
Italy 3.2% 1.6%
Euro area 3.2% 2.0%
Germany 2.9% 2.0%
France 2.6% 0.8%

Source: Eurostat euro indicators release of 17 September 2026.

Why Is Spanish Inflation Higher Than Eurozone Peers?

Part of the answer is structural. The PVPC tariff and smart meters pass energy costs to consumers faster. Fuel and tourism also carry a large weight in the Spanish basket.

Demand plays a role as well. Spain GDP Q2 2026 growth came in at 0.7% on the quarter. The Spain unemployment rate stood at 9.87% in the second quarter. The services PMI reached 57.8 in August, while manufacturing slipped to 49.5.

ECB Policy Implications of the Spain CPI Release

The ECB raised rates on 10 September for the second time this year. The ECB deposit rate has stood at 2.50% since 16 September, according to the ECB press release. The main refinancing rate is 2.65%. The marginal lending rate is 2.90%.

Lagarde told the European Parliament on 28 September that she sees higher inflation ahead. She added that the ECB does not yet see signs of it becoming embedded. The jump in Spanish core inflation is one of the first tests of that view.

ECB Staff Projections September 2026

Year Headline inflation Core inflation GDP growth
2026 3.0% 2.5% 0.9%
2027 2.5% 2.6% 1.4%
2028 2.1% 2.3% 1.5%

How Much Does Spain Weigh in Euro Area Inflation?

Spain makes up roughly 12% of the euro area HICP basket, on our rough estimate. At 5.0%, it would add about 0.6 percentage points to the euro area rate.

On a simple calculation, the Spain real interest rate is about minus 2.5 percentage points. That is the 2.50% deposit rate minus 5.0% HICP. The figure is illustrative and uses current inflation, which can differ from expected inflation.

ECB Rate Hike Probability for October

Market pricing moved around this week. After the release on 29 September, investingLive reported roughly even odds of an October hike. A morning preview from the same outlet had put the chance at about 31%. On 24 September, ECB Watch showed about 60%.

Source View Date
Goldman Sachs Pause in October, hike to 2.75% in December Around 18 September 2026
Morgan Stanley Pause in October, hike to 2.75% in December 15 September 2026
Deutsche Bank December hike more likely than a hold September 2026
Funcas panel of 19 Spanish institutes Deposit rate at 2.50% until mid-2027 16 September 2026
ECB Watch (futures) About 60% chance of an October hike 24 September 2026

ECB Rate Decision October 29: Time and Context

The Governing Council meets on 28 and 29 October. The decision is due at 14:15 CET on 29 October. The press conference follows at 14:45 CET. New staff projections arrive only at the ECB December 2026 meeting. Central bankers rarely give spoilers, so markets will have to wait for 14:15 CET.

Our guide to the ECB meeting in October 2026 covers the dates and market pricing in more detail. It also explains why some calendars wrongly list a rate decision on 1 October.

What Could Shape an ECB Rate Hike October 2026 Decision

Ahead of the ECB interest rate decision October 2026, these data points get the most attention.

  • Euro area flash inflation for September lands on 2 October.
  • German state and national CPI data arrive on 30 September.
  • Brent crude has traded near $107 a barrel, well above pre-war levels.
  • Talks on the Strait of Hormuz can move oil prices quickly in either direction.
  • New wage deals in Spain could show whether higher prices are feeding into pay.

How Markets Reacted to the Spain CPI Release

The first reaction was muted. The small HICP surprise and a slower monthly CPI rate took some heat out of the headline.

Market Level Time and source
EUR/USD About 1.1360 29 September after the release, investingLive
Spain 10-year yield About 4.13% Close on 28 September
Germany 10-year yield About 3.63% Close on 28 September
Spain vs Germany 10-year spread About 50 basis points Our calculation
IBEX 35 19,650.7 09:28 Madrid time on 29 September
Brent, November contract $107.10 Morning of 29 September
Euribor 12 Month, September average About 3.25% Provisional estimate

Prices change constantly. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

EUR/USD Today: A Muted Reaction

EUR/USD held near 1.1360 after the data. The pair trades close to the bottom of its 2026 range.

Analysts cited by Spanish media list EUR/USD support levels at 1.1350 and at the 2026 low of 1.1325. The same reports mention resistance at 1.1400 and at 1.1450 to 1.1490. These levels describe past trading and do not predict where the pair will go.

A hawkish ECB does not automatically lift the euro. Higher oil prices weigh on the euro area's trade balance. The Fed also raised rates to 3.75% to 4.00% on 16 September. Our article on the Fed rate hike explains the US side.

Spain 10 Year Bond Yield and the Bund Spread

The Spain 10 year bond yield closed at about 4.13% on 28 September. Spanish media describe this as the highest level since early 2014. Some sources date the previous peak to December 2013.

The Bonos Bund spread stood near 50 basis points. In Spain this gap is known as the prima de riesgo. Italy's 10-year yield was about 4.60% and France's about 4.78%, so Spain paid less than both.

Spanish government bond yields have risen across the curve. So far the move has come mostly from higher risk-free rates. The spread over Germany has stayed fairly stable.

Shorter-dated yields have often reacted most to changes in ECB expectations. Spain's 2-year yield rose about 40 basis points over the past month to 3.38%. How a bond holding responds depends on its duration and risk profile.

Some investors use inflation-linked bonds to manage inflation risk. These bonds can still lose value when real yields rise.

Borrowers feel the move too. The Euribor 12 month rate averaged about 3.25% in September, a high for the year. For Spain mortgage rates on variable loans, a 1-point rise in Euribor adds about €94 a month to a typical payment.

IBEX 35 Today and Spanish Bank Stocks

The IBEX 35 closed at 19,600.3 on 28 September, down 0.51%. It opened slightly higher on 29 September. The index has traded sideways for 19 sessions. Spanish market reports most often cite 19,500 as support.

Banks make up about 38% of the index's market value, according to Estrategias de Inversión. That makes the index sensitive to news that affects lenders. The chart below shows the longer price history of a Spain 35 index CFD for context.

Bank shares have often been linked to higher rate expectations, since wider interest margins can support earnings. Higher rates can also raise loan defaults and slow new mortgages. Energy shares can gain from higher oil prices, yet they face political risk from a possible windfall tax on refiners.

Index CFDs are listed on the index CFD page. The contract specifications there show which instruments are available to you.

Brent Oil Price and European Energy

Brent's November contract traded near $107 on 29 September. The December contract sat close to $100. That gap suggests the market expects some easing, although the timing is unclear.

Oil reacts fast to news on the Strait of Hormuz. On 28 September, Trading Economics reported that President Trump had rejected an Iranian proposal for a phased reopening.

Brent's path is uncertain. A deal on Hormuz could pull prices lower, while new supply disruption could push them higher. Energy CFDs are listed on the commodities page.

Rising European Cost Pressures

Spain is part of a wider story. Energy costs are rising across Europe, and gas storage is running low ahead of winter.

Gas Storage and the TTF Gas Price

Measure Level Comparison
EU gas storage 70.9% full on 26 September 81.8% a year earlier
German gas storage About 57% full Lowest in about 15 years
TTF gas, front month About €71 per MWh Near €84 in mid-September
EU storage goal About 80% by 1 November Softened from the earlier target

Sources: GIE AGSI+ via Global Energy Flow, AleaSoft. Data as of late September 2026.

A cold winter could lift gas and power prices. Through PVPC, that would reach Spanish CPI quickly.

Wages and Spain Wage Indexation Clauses

Pay is the main channel for second-round effects in Spain. Collective agreements to August set average pay rises of 3.04%. Agreements signed in 2026 average 3.72%, according to Ministry of Labour data.

Indexation clauses cover 39.3% of workers under collective agreements, or about 3.48 million people. These clauses lift pay when inflation beats a set level. With CPI near 5%, many of them could trigger in early 2027, on our reading.

The CCOO and UGT unions want fixed rises of 4% a year for three years. Talks with employers on the national wage framework, known as AENC, have stalled.

Spain Anti-Crisis Decree

The government planned to approve a new package on 29 September. Energy minister Sara Aagesen outlined the caps that morning, as Infobae reported. The official text had not yet appeared in the state gazette.

  • Rises in the regulated TUR gas tariff are capped at 15% from 1 October.
  • Without the cap, the minister said the tariff would have risen by more than 45%.
  • The maximum Spain butane price is set at €19.55 per bottle, up from €18.84.
  • The fuel tax rebate is reported to continue until December at a lower rate.

This Spain energy price cap limits headline CPI in the short term. It also adds to the deficit. Prices may step up when the support ends, which could show in January 2027 data.

Spain Inflation Forecast 2026 and 2027

Most forecasts were made before the September data. The Funcas panel had expected 4.0% for September, well below the actual 4.9%.

Institution CPI 2026 CPI 2027 Date
Funcas panel consensus 3.4% 2.5% 16 September 2026
Funcas 3.6% 2.9% September 2026
BBVA Research 3.8% 2.8% September 2026
CaixaBank Research 3.2% 2.4% September 2026
Bank of Spain (HICP) 3.6% 2.6% June 2026
AIReF 3.3% 2.4% July 2026

Forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future results. Each figure reflects the institution's view on the date shown.

The Bank of Spain inflation forecast includes a severe scenario. In that scenario a long war lifts 2026 inflation to 5.9% and cuts growth to 1.9%.

Funcas expects Spanish inflation to stay above 4% in the coming months. October 2025 saw a 0.7% monthly rise, so the Spain inflation October 2026 reading faces a high base. For the Spain inflation outlook 2027, March matters, since March 2026 saw a 1.2% monthly jump. These are projections and may prove wrong.

Two Scenarios Before the ECB Decision

Views from the sources above point to two broad outcomes. The table sets out both, along with what could challenge each reading.

Scenario What could lead there How markets may read it What could challenge this reading
Energy stays high Brent above $100 and firm core inflation in the 2 October flash As support for an October or December hike A deal on Hormuz or weak growth data
Energy eases A US and Iran deal and cheaper oil As support for a longer ECB pause A hot core inflation print or new wage deals near 4%

These scenarios are illustrative. They do not forecast prices or describe how any market will move.

How Markets Have Often Reacted to Inflation Surprises

  • The euro has sometimes firmed on hot data when markets priced in higher ECB rates.
  • Short-dated bond yields have often moved more than long-dated ones.
  • Reactions can fade quickly when the harmonised figure differs from the national one.
  • Energy headlines can outweigh inflation data on the same day.

Past market reactions are not a reliable indicator of future reactions.

Risk Points Around Data Releases

  • Spreads can widen around major announcements, which raises trading costs.
  • Stop-loss orders are one way to manage risk, although they can be filled at a worse price when markets gap.
  • Leverage magnifies gains and losses alike.
  • A demo account lets you practise with virtual funds, although results can differ from live trading.

Spain Inflation 2022 Comparison: Energy Shock 2022 vs 2026

Measure 2022 2026
Spain CPI peak 10.8% in July 2022 4.9% so far, in September 2026
Euro area HICP peak 10.6% in October 2022 3.2% in August 2026, latest final
ECB deposit rate before the shock -0.50% 2.00%
ECB tightening +450 basis points by September 2023 +50 basis points by September 2026
Size of each hike 50 to 75 basis points 25 basis points

Spain's bond spread is narrower today than it was in 2022. That can change if fiscal or political risk rises. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.

In 2022 Spanish inflation peaked earlier than inflation in the euro area as a whole. The same fast pass-through could again make Spain an early signal for the region.
