How to Download MetaTrader 5 on Mac
In the past, Mac users have experienced issues with downloading and using MetaTrader 5 on MacOS. Indeed, a native desktop version of MT5 for Mac doesn’t actually exist.
Instead, traders have a few different options for using the trading platform, the most straightforward of which is downloading a modified version of MT5 from MetaTrader developer, MetaQuotes.
This modified version, which is available at Admiral Markets, runs using Wine – a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on various other operating systems, including Mac.
Here’s how to get started.
1. Sign up with Admiral Markets
In order to download MT5 on your Mac, you’ll need to register with Admiral Markets and log in to the Dashboard.
2. Download the Installer
Inside the Dashboard, on the left of the screen, select MetaTrader.
Here you will find the various options for downloading both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, as well as choices for using browser-based versions of both platforms and exclusive extensions.
Click on MetaTrader 5 for MacOS to download the installation package.
3. Open the Installation Package
Open the file and follow the instructions on the screen, you will need to read and agree to the Software Licence Agreement and then the installer will take care of everything else for you!
4. Finished!
Once downloaded, you’ll see a confirmation message and MT5 should automatically open shortly thereafter. If it does not, you should be able to locate the application in the Launchpad on your Mac.
How to Use MetaTrader 5 with Parallels for Mac
Whilst the download option explained above may be the most straightforward, some Mac users prefer operating the Windows version of MT5 on their Mac using Parallels.
Parallels is software that allows Mac users to run the Windows operating system on their computer by creating a virtual machine.
A virtual machine acts like a computer within a computer, allowing users to run multiple operating systems on one physical machine.
Parallels for Mac requires either an annual subscription or a one-time purchase. However, Admiral Markets clients can obtain three months of Parallels Pro for free, provided they meet certain eligibility requirements.
1. Open an Account with Admiral Markets
In order to obtain three free months of Parallels Pro with Admiral Markets, you will need to open a live account and maintain a minimum live account equity of 3,000 euros (or equivalent).
You will then need to request the license on the Parallels page of the Admiral Markets website. The request will be reviewed by the Admiral Markets team and, subject to approval, a license key will be sent to the registered email.
Alternatively, you can register and purchase the software directly from Parallels.
2. Download Parallels for Mac
Head to the Parallels website and download the latest version of the software. Once the installation file has downloaded, open it and follow the on-screen instructions.
Once Parallels has finished downloading, and you’ve entered a license key, you will be able to create a virtual machine. Select the Windows option to begin the installation process.
The process of creating the virtual machine and installing Windows might take some time. Once it’s complete, you will need to accept the Windows license agreement.
You will then be forwarded to a page prompting you to activate your copy of Windows. To do so, you can either buy a new license or use an existing one.
3. Download MetaTrader 5
You will now be able to use the Windows operating system and to use the windows version of MT5 on your Mac!
In the Windows desktop, open an internet browser and head to the Admiral Markets website. Log in to the Dashboard and navigate to the MetaTrader download section.
Here, you can start your download of MetaTrader 5 for Windows. Once you’ve downloaded the installation file, open it and follow the instructions on screen to download the platform!
