Biggest Renewable Energy Companies in the World by Market Cap

In the following sections, we’ll take a look at each of the 10 largest renewable energy companies in the world by market cap.

1. NextEra Energy

NextEra Energy is a world leading energy company and the largest renewable energy company in the world by market cap. It owns the Florida Power & Light (FPL) Company, NextEra Energy Resources and a number of other subsidiaries.

FPL is the largest electric utility company in the world by market capitalisation. Although it has a large solar energy capacity, more than 80% of its generating capacity is made up of nuclear and natural gas (i.e. non-renewable energy sources).

However, its other subsidiary, NextEra Energy Resources is the largest generator of renewable energy from the wind and the sun in the world, as well as being a leader in battery storage. In 2023, 85% of its total generating capacity came from wind and solar energy.

2. Iberdrola

Iberdrola is a Spanish electric utility company which serves more than 36 million customers around the world. It is a world leader in the production of wind energy, with a total installed capacity with more than 22 GW.

In total, Iberdrola has an installed renewable energy capacity of 40.5 GW, which accounts for 66% of its total energy capacity. The remainder is made up of both natural gas and nuclear.

3. GE Vernova

GE Vernova was formed in April 2024 from the spinoff of General Electric’s energy businesses. It is a US energy equipment manufacturer and services provider.

Operating under three segments - Power, Wind and Electrification – the renewable energy company’s technology helps generate around 25% of the world’s electricity.

Its Power segment includes gas, hydro power, nuclear and steam, with its hydro turbines and generators representing more than 25% of installed capacity worldwide. The Wind segment, as the name suggests, focuses on delivering both onshore and offshore wind turbines as well as turbine blades. Its Electrification segment comprises of solar and storage solutions, as well as grid solutions, power conversion and electrification software.

4. Adani Green Energy

Adani Green Energy is an Indian renewable energy company which was founded in 2015 and is listed on both the National Stock Exchange of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange. At the time of writing, is the third biggest renewable energy company in the world by market capitalisation.

Adani Green Energy has an operational renewable energy capacity of almost 11 GW across its portfolio of solar and wind projects, with more than 12 GW (gigawatts) of further capacity under construction. By 2030, the company aims to have a portfolio of 50 GW of renewable energy capacity.

5. Vestas Wind Systems

Vestas Wind Systems is a Danish company which manufactures, installs and services both onshore and offshore wind turbines.

At the time of writing, the wind energy company has installed more than 179 GW of capacity across 88 countries around the world. Furthermore, it provides services for more than 55,000 wind turbines in 77 countries with a combined capacity of over 149 GW.

6. First Solar

Next on our list of the biggest renewable energy companies in the world is First Solar, a leading manufacturer of solar panels.

It is known for the pioneering thin-film modules it uses in its panels, which have a number of energy yield advantages over other designs. By 2026, the company expects to have an annual manufacturing capacity of 21 GW.

7. Sungrow Power Supply

Over to China for the next on our list of the world’s largest renewable energy companies with Sungrow.

The company is a leading manufacturer of photovoltaic solar panel inverters, which convert the direct current (DC) output of a solar panel into the alternating current (AC) that is needed to be fed into an electricity grid.

It has more than 515 GW of installed capacity of inverter and converter equipment around the world, and has a global annual production capacity of 330 GW.

8. EDP Renováveis

EDP Renováveis (EDPR) was formed in 2007 to operate the renewable energy assets of its parent company, EDP Group.

EDPR is present in 28 countries around the world, operating both wind and solar projects with a combined capacity of 16.6 GW. It is the fourth largest wind energy producer in the world.

9. Brookfield Renewable Partners

Brookfield Renewable Partners is a Canadian renewable energy company which is 60% owned by Brookfield Asset Management and invests in renewable energy assets. Its portfolio contains hydroelectric, wind and solar solutions with a combined operational capacity of more than 31 GW. It has a further 155 GW of capacity in its development pipeline.

10. LONGi Green Energy Technology

Founded in 2000, LONGi Green Energy Technology is a Chinese solar company which is a world leading producer of solar wafers, cells and modules.
