How to Install and Trade With MetaTrader 4 Windows
In this article, we will explain how to download and install MetaTrader 4 Windows on your computer, how to open an account and how to place your first trade!
How to Install MetaTrader 4 Windows
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10 and does not have any specific system requirements in order to work on your machine. In the following sections, we will take you through four steps in order to get MetaTrader 4 on your PC.
1. Download the MetaTrader 4 Installer
Head over to the MetaTrader 4 Windows download page on the Admirals website and click the blue “Download Now” button (as shown below).
You will be prompted to enter your full name, email address and telephone number before being able to download the MetaTrader 4 for Windows installer.
Alternatively, if you are already registered with Admirals, sign in to your ‘Traders Room’, select ‘Trading Platforms’ on the left hand side of your dashboard and click on ‘MetaTrader 4 PC’ to begin the download.
2. Read and Agree to the Licensing Agreement
Once you have successfully downloaded the MetaTrader 4 Windows installation file, open it.
You will be presented with a license agreement from MetaQuotes Software Corp. which you should read carefully before clicking ‘Next’ to agree and proceed to installation.

3. Install MetaTrader 4
After clicking ‘Next’ the installation should begin automatically, now you just need to wait whilst MetaTrader 4 Windows installs on your machine! This should not take long, but depends on your computer.

4. Log in to Your MetaTrader 4 Account
Once the installation is completed you will need to click the ‘Finish’ button and MetaTrader 4 should open automatically. If it does not, then you can open MT4 by finding its icon on your computer desktop.
The first time that MetaTrader 4 opens, a dialogue box will be displayed prompting you to select a trading server in order to log in to an account, like in the image below.
If you already have a MetaTrader 4 account, select the relevant server, click ‘Next’ and then enter your account details on the following screen.

How to Open an MT4 Account
Demo Trading Account
For those who are new to trading, it is recommended that you open and practice on a demo trading account prior to trading on the live markets.
A demo trading account allows traders to experience real market conditions on MT4 whilst trading with virtual funds. This means that you can practice trading absolutely risk-free while you are still learning the ropes.

Live Trading Account
For experienced traders, who are ready to trade on the live markets, you can open a live MT4 account with Admirals and start trading Forex and CFDs! In order to do this, you firstly need to sign up with Admirals.
Once you have registered with Admirals, follow the instructions below to apply for a live trading account:
- Log in to your ‘Traders Room’ account
- Scroll down and click on the blue ‘Open Live Account’ button
- Add your telephone number and then verify it, if you have not already done so
- Fill out your details on the following pages, including your address, tax identification, financial details and passport number
- Read and accept the confirmation notice
- Upload the requested documentation in order to verify your identity
Once you have completed and submitted your application, it will be reviewed by Admirals. We will contact you by email with the results of your application and, if applicable, the login details for your new trading account.

How to Place Your First Trade on MetaTrader 4

Once you have opened MetaTrader 4 for Windows and logged into your account, you can now start exploring the different features of MT4, viewing live price charts and placing trades.
In order to open a price chart and place a trade, you will need to select the instrument you wish to trade from the ‘Market Watch’ window on the left of the screen. If Market Watch is not displayed, press Control + M to open it.
Once you have identified your desired instrument, right click it and select ‘Chart Window’ to open a price chart.

To open a position, right click anywhere on the chart, select ‘Trading’ and click ‘New Order’ and you will be presented with the screen shown below. Here, you can choose the type of order, enter the volume of the trade you wish to make and set a stop loss and take profit.
